As we approached our first destination (Oudtshoorn), we began to hit many mountains, which was a new experience for me to drive. Our second day of travel consisted of about 10 hours of traveling, unfortunately including some construction and begin parked on the N1 highway. At about 5pm we were nearing Oudtshoorn but stopped off at a little observation area in the mountains, we thought. We actually stumbled upon a beautiful waterfall and spent a bit of time there, relaxing after a day of travel.
We then journeyed on into Oudtshoorn and found our backpackers, Backpackers Joyrides and Paradise. The staff there was incredible and answered all of our questions. We had a 4 person room with a private bath, and the beds were wonderfully soft and clean. By far the best backpackers we stayed at, and located just outside the city center.
For dinner that night we walked across the street to a promising looking restaurant. Inside we discovered that they served ostrice, eland (antelope), warthog, and zebra. So the four of us each took on and at the cast of the Lion King (sorry Disney!). I had the zebra, which was a bit rarer than I liked, but so good and flavorful! My next favorite was the warthog, or Pumba. It was a uniquely African experience.
We then proceeded to go back to the backpackers and watch The Lion King. Ironic, I know.
